simple reminder to creatives

It's easy to get caught up in advertising. Especially if you're talented and you start listening to everyone else's 2 cents. In cases like these, try to remember what got you there in the first place.

“Eventually I discovered for myself the utterly simple prescription for creativity: Be intensely yourself. Don’t try to be outstanding; don’t try to be a success; don’t try to do pictures for others to look at – just please yourself.” ~Ralph Steiner

Paula's not going to make you feel better in the long run. And you know it. Every creative should keep a set of Simons in their heads.

(Simons = honest, smart, talented, slightly opinionated judges for your thinking/effort)

Consider the Simons a quality control squad for your inflated ego, which will undoubtly grow with your talent and success.

Here are my 3 Simons:

1) David Droga

I wish my daily wake up call could be David Droga popping out of an alarm clock and slapping me upside the head.

2) Mark Romanek

The best music video ever made. Ever. Trent Reznor wrote it, Johnny Cash lived it and Mark Romanek put it all together. This video reminds me that a group of talented people working together will always be better than the sum of their individual parts.

3) Bill Hicks

Everybody needs a pace setter. On my best days, he's mine.

3b) Louis C.K.

He's my alt Simon, on days when I take myself too seriously or feel entitled to flights without delays.
